CALHOUN COUNTY > Ferries closed by high water - Two ferries that carry motorists in and out of Calhoun County have been closed because of flooding.

The Brussels Ferry and a state highway running through the county were closed Thursday evening, the Illinois Department of Transportation said. Motorists seeking to cross the Illinois River were directed by the department to go north to the Joe Page Bridge in Hardin or the Kampsville Ferry.

Further north, the Winfield Ferry between Lincoln and Calhoun counties remained open.

Calhoun County is a peninsula between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.

The Missouri River has swelled following heavy rain and snowmelt this month. The flooding has claimed three lives, damaged thousands of homes and busted about 20 levees in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri.

In Missouri, the river was expected to crest Friday in St. Joseph at the third-highest flood level on record.
