Iceland's busy summer tourist season is sure to take a hit from the bankruptcy of Icelandic budget airline WOW Air.

Passengers have been stranded on two continents after the airline announced overnight it had ceased operations.

WOW grounded at least six planes that were set to leave North American airports last night, including Toronto and Montreal, while Iceland-bound planes from seven European cities did not take off this morning.

In a statement on its website, the airline advises passengers to check with other airlines for ways to reach their destinations.

WOW Air began operations in 2012 and specialized in ultra-cheap flights from 27 airports between North America and Europe.(5)
