High School Baseball: Burris' Three-Hit Day Helps Edwardsville Outlast Columbia

Article excerpt

EDWARDSVILLE - Blake Burris needed something to jump-start his season.

So the Edwardsville High senior outfielder turned to the classic rock band Poison for a little help.

After going hitless in his first three games of the season, Burris changed his walkup song to "Nothin' But a Good Time," a 1988 release from Bret Michaels and his crew.

It proved to be the perfect move.

"My dad had a little influence," Burris noted. "He said it would be a good one to get you going."

Burris had a real good time Friday, banging out three hits to help the Tigers fend off Columbia 8-4 in a nonconference battle at the District 7 Sports Complex.

Edwardsville (5-2) won its fourth in a row and halted the Eagles' seven-game run in the process.

Burris is 7-for-14 at the plate after breaking out of the 0-for-6 slump with a bunt single in a 5-4 win over Granite City on March 20. The three-hit game Friday was his first since a 3-for-5 effort in a 12-4 win over Parkway South on March 30, 2018.

"I'm starting to pick up the ball (well)," Burris said. "I feel like I've finally got my swing on pace."

Burris singled to start a four-run uprising in the first inning against against Columbia (8-2). He added a hit in the fourth before putting the game away with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

"We were able to get the runs when we needed early on," Edwardsville coach Tim Funkhouser said. "I thought we took some really good at-bats."

Burris paced the nine-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance. Jack Cooper added a solo homer and leadoff hitter Hayden Moore reached base three times and also scored three runs. …
