The chair of Alberta Barley says the industry has been lucky that feed barley is in short supply worldwide following a feud between Canada and Saudi Arabia last August.

Dave Bishop says Canada had been shipping about 122-thousand tonnes of feed barley to Saudi Arabia every year -- amounts that can sometimes reach 10 per cent of all Canadian exports of the product.

The feud followed criticism by Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland on Twitter of the regime's arrest of women's rights activists.

Since then, Canada has been shut out of the Middle Eastern country's market.

Bishop says extra demand from markets like China has helped make up the loss. (The Canadian Press)

If finalized, the cannabis produced by both Aurora and Aphria will supply the German medical cannabis market, which is the largest in Europe according to a recent report by Brightfield Group.

Jefferies analyst Owen Bennett says the news is positive for Aurora, as it helps to validate the quality of its medical operations and puts the Edmonton-based company in good stead when attempting to enter other markets. (The Canadian Press)
