An Ontario scientist is among an international team of researchers that is about to unveil the first captured image of a black hole.

The space picture is to be shown at a news conference in Washington D-C this morning, at about 9 o'clock Eastern Time.

The image of the black hole was compiled by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, a group of scientists bent on proving the existence of black holes and documenting what they look like despite the fact they cannot release light.

The team includes Avery Broderick, an astrophysicist and associate professor at the University of Waterloo.(2)

Tens of thousands of Quebecers have been spending another night in the dark without power after Monday's freezing rain storm north of Montreal.

As of 4:30 a-m Eastern Time, Hydro-Quebec reports about 111-thousand homes and businesses are still without electricity.

The utility warned late yesterday that unless snowy and windy conditions improved for the scores of crews out working on restoration, blackouts could last into Thursday for some customers.

Hardest-hit areas were the Montreal suburb of Laval, and the Lanaudiere and Laurentians regions.(2)



The federal government has introduced legislation to remove a final federal barrier to the easier flow of booze across provincial boundaries.

Internal Trade Minister Dominic Leblanc now says it is up to provinces and territories to do some heavy lifting and make their own changes.

He has proposed changes to the federal Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act that would aid lower levels of government in lifting provincial and territorial trade restrictions on beer, wine and spirits. …
