Mars to Invest $30M in Plant

Article excerpt

Mars Wrigley Confectionery will make a $30 million capital investment in its Topeka plant, the Greater Topeka Partnership revealed Wednesday.

The announcement came after elected officials on the board of directors of the Joint Economic Development Organization voted 7-0 to approve a contract providing Mars $66,000 in cash incentives using revenue from a countywide half-cent sales tax.

“This expansion illustrates the continued commitment that Mars has in the Topeka and Shawnee County community,” said Molly Howey, senior vice president of economic development for the GTP.

Mars in March 2014 officially opened its manufacturing plant at the Kanza Fire Commerce Park, just southwest of S.W. 77th and Topeka Boulevard. The company already has invested more than $500 million into its Topeka site while creating more than 420 jobs, said Matt Lara, public relations manager for the GTP.

The expansion will result in an overall economic impact of $38.5 million, Lara said.

The contract approved Wednesday calls for Mars to receive $2,200 for each $1 million in capital investment it makes as part of the upcoming expansion.

“We are proud to be part of the Topeka community for the last five years,” said Bret Spangler, Topeka site director for Mars. “We are grateful for the continued support from the city of Topeka, Shawnee County and state of Kansas, and we are pleased to further invest in the community.”

Votes in favor of the contract were cast by Shawnee County Commissioners Bob Archer, Bill Riphahn and Kevin Cook, Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla and Topeka City Council members Jeff Coen, Tony Emerson and Mike Lesser.

“Mars Wrigley Confectionery is an exceptional company to have in our community, and their support of community growth and partnerships across Topeka and Shawnee County ensures continued economic prosperity,” De La Isla said. …
