Blues Notebook: Binnington Has 'Something to Learn From'

Article excerpt

SAN JOSE -- Jordan Binnington's first game in the SAP Center wasn't one for the scrapbook. The rookie goalie allowed five goals in the first two periods, albeit with minimal help from his defense, in the Blues' 6-3 loss Saturday to the San Jose Sharks.

It was the second-most goals allowed by Binnington in the NHL, exceeded only by the six goals he allowed in Game 3 of Round 1 against Winnipeg -- also a 6-3 defeat. (The Sharks' sixth goal Saturday was an empty-netter.)

"It was a good experience for me, first game at the Shark Tank," Binnington said. "Obviously, they came out hard. They're a highly-skilled team. So something to learn from."

In 44 combined regular-season and playoff starts this season, Binnington allowed more than three goals only six times.

A finalist for the Calder Trophy, which goes to the NHL rookie of the year, Binnington has displayed a knack for putting bad games behind him. The Blues are counting on him to do the same this time, or else risk coming home down 2-0 in the series, which resumes Monday night.

"I think he has a calm head," Blues coach Craig Berube said. "He forgets about it and moves on. He's been doing that all year. He doesn't get rattled on that. (Saturday) wasn't a great game for anybody. Again, we just gotta move on. We gotta learn from it and make some corrections.

"He'll do the same thing. He just moves on."

Binnington faced an early problem Saturday when San Jose got a five-on-three power play for 1 minute 3 seconds. That led to a Joe Pavelski goal that gave the Sharks the lead for good.

"Yeah, it's not that fun, and with the caliber of players on that team especially," Binnington said. "But that's part of hockey and I've got to be there to make those saves and give the team a chance to win."
