And All That Jazz!

Article excerpt

AFTER two decades on the city's cultural map, the Manchester Jazz Festival clearly hasn't forgotten how to make a grand entrance.

Next Thursday, the annual jazz music showcase will be kicking off with a mass participation event in Manchester city centre.

Written and directed by awardwinning composer Andy Scott, the piece, entitled Mancunity, is a proud celebration of Manchester's resilience - comprising some of the north-west's finest jazz talents, the procession will start at various points across the city centre, before meeting in St Ann's Square for an epic musical climax.

First and foremost, this year's event has a brand new festival hub: leaving its previous home of Albert Square, MJF 2019 will now run the length of St Ann's Square to New Cathedral Street.

In addition to the main hub, there will be gigs staged right across the city at some of Manchester's best-loved gig venues - and some less expected buildings.

Naturally, street food and drink will make up a large part of the celebrations.

The street food line-up has been curated by Manchester Food and Drink Festival and will feature Middle Eastern masters The Ottomen (famed for their meze plates and enormous halloumi wraps); Grandad's Sausages (gourmet hotdogs based on the owners' grandad's recipes); The Humble Kitchen (locally-sourced feeds); Tibetan Kitchen (Himalayan dumplings and stews); and Cyprus Kouszina (halloumi fries and chicken souvlaki).

Proove and Doughology will also be there slinging pizzas, alongside Ank Marvin with their gourmet game burgers, Rockin Buddha with vegan Chinese food, Porky Pig with their Yorkshire pudding wraps, and On Fire BBQ with meaty sandwiches. …
