THE departure of Vincent Kompany did not just leave a hole in the centre of the City defence ... it also deprived the Blues of their main leader.

And while it seems likely that David Silva will step up to assume the captain's armband next season, it means there will also be an addition to the leadership group which Pep Guardiola has introduced to the squad.

The Blues boss likes to have five players, usually from the senior professionals, who are seen as the men to help lift morale, to deal with issues and provide a link between the squad and the management team, if necessary.

Kompany's departure will leave a vacant slot in that group, with everyone moving up the pecking order one place.

That will mean Silva, likely to be in his last season at City, should become captain, having regularly stepped Bernardo is nobody captaincy in to the role during Kompany's frequent injury absences.

Vincent And that would mean Fernandinho is likely to become vicecaptain - as he seems to have moved ahead of Sergio Aguero in the hierarchy.

Silva actually captained City in 15 of the 38 Premier League games last season, with Kompany donning the armband in 13, Fernandinho in seven, Aguero in two and Fabian Delph in one - the home defeat by Crystal Palace, for which the other four, plus Kevin De Bruyne, were all injured.

De Bruyne was added to the leadership group last season, but his only captaincy came in the FA Cup.

But who will Guardiola turn to if he wants a fifth leader to add to Silva, Fernandinho, Aguero and De Bruyne? Bernardo Silva is a prime candidate, despite being relatively inexperienced at the age of 24.

Bernardo leads by example on the pitch, known for his phenomenal work rate, and Kompany himself tipped the Portugal star as captaincy material - as soon as he loses his tendency towards tomfoolery!
