JOE Gallagher believes Tyson Fury can inspire the next generation of world champions from Manchester.

The no.1 ranked heavyweight in the world takes on Tom Schwarz in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning as he closes in on a rematch with WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

After Anthony Joshua's shock defeat at the hands of Andy Ruiz Jnr, unbeaten lineal champ Fury has been restored at the top of Ring Magazine's rankings, despite not holding one of the four major belts.

Trainer Gallagher - who has guided Bury's Scott Quigg and New Moston's Anthony Crolla to world titles as well as Liverpool brothers Liam and Callum Smith - makes his promotional debut tomorrow in Wythenshawe in a bill full of local boxers.

And he feels Fury, who has battled back from mental health issues to rise to the top of the world rankings once again, is the ideal inspiration for the stream of young Manchester fighters looking to reach the top. "Boxing is in a very strong state in Manchester," Gallagher told M.E.N. Sport. "We have Tyson Fury now recognised as the No.1 heavyweight in the world.

"You have Terry Flanagan and Zelfa Barrett, who is fighting for the Commonwealth title on Saturday. Anthony Crolla may have one more fight left in him, but we have some exceptional young talent coming through.

"There is a next generation, a wave of kids coming through who have had 12 to 14 fights and are looking to fight for British titles before the year is out.

"Manchester is in a good state. The next generation are coming through and they are inspired by those who have gone before them.

"Tyson Fury has come back from his mental health issues to headline at Vegas, how can you not have a more inspired generation of boxers coming through when they have people like that to look up to. If he can do it with the setbacks he has had, why can't the next generation of fighters? …
