The June 9 article "Take a Rust Belt Vacation" is simply the best article I've ever read about Youngstown, Ohio.

Not only did the writer capture the city's underdog attitude - claimed by neither Cleveland nor Pittsburgh, and steelworker-boxer-gangster tough - but he also provided a fresh perspective and vibe.

Rarely does one see Youngstown portrayed in a positive light.

I worked downtown at WFMJ while attending Youngstown State in the late 1970s. The news and entertainment district that has sprouted along the Mahoning River blew my mind. This was a fun read.

Conservative mindset

The June 23 op-ed by George Will "Conservatism vs. Progressivism" was interesting, implying progressives are collectivists rather than people who want the American dream available to everyone, not just the rich.

Mr. Will claims conservatives take society seriously. He explains how conservatives view society, as a "spontaneous order of cooperating individuals in consensual, contractual market relations." That's how he thinks of American society? Nothing more than a business portfolio? What a paltry vision Mr. Will has.

Mr. Will also claims that conservatives are the ones who understand individualism and individuals. Conservatives certainly do seem to care about some individuals. We saw that in the obscenely huge tax breaks they gave the rich while the rest of us ended up paying more.

When conservative Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was asked how he planned to pay for it, he responded by citing cuts to Social Security, Medicare and other safety net programs working people need.

In every state where conservatives rule, they work against the individual: Voter suppression laws to prevent, deter and harass some voters, often people of color.

In those same states, conservative politicians enact laws which harm the LGBTQ community as well as some religious minorities and unions. …
