Polanco Starts His Rehab Thursday in Class AAA

Article excerpt

Gregory Polanco will start a rehabilitation assignment Thursday with the Class AAA Indianapolis Indians, according to Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk.

Polanco likely will be with the Indians "through the All-Star break and if not beyond," Tomcyzk said.

"He's excited. He's in a good spot. The posterior left shoulder inflammation has subsided. We are encouraged by his progress."

Polanco started the season on the injured list and missed the first 19 games. When the outfielder returned, he posted a .242/.301/.425 slash line with six home runs, 17 RBIs and 12 walks. But he struggled with his timing on his swing as he regained strength in his shoulder and struck out 49 times in his 167 plate appearances.

Keone Kela, who has missed 51 games with right shoulder inflammation, also could return soon. He threw a bullpen session before the Wednesday night game against the Chicago Cubs, and, if he doesn't experience any arm problems, he will throw a simulated game Saturday at PNC Park.

Taillon sees progress

Jameson Taillon expressed encouragement Wednesday with recent x-rays on his right elbow flexor tendon strain.

"Yeah, I've had some new images taken. I'm pretty encouraged by it," Taillon told reporters before the the game against the Cubs. "My goal is to pick up a ball. If all goes well, I'll progress back to pitching again this year."

Taillon has been out since May 2, and the Pirates are 27-28 in that stretch.

"I just have to play catch at 50 or 60 feet, lobbing it on flat ground, see how it goes and go from there," Taillon said. "If all goes well, hopefully, I'll be back on a mound here soon."

The opening day starter knows he has to be patient with his recovery, but that doesn't make it easier.

"Yeah, it's tough. Every single day there's a game, and it's another game I'm missing. It's another game I'm on the IL," Taillon said. …
