A new pilot program announced on Friday aims to attract and retain migrant workers by giving them an opportunity to become permanent residents.

Temporary foreign farm workers who are eligible for the new pilot will be able to apply for permanent residency after 12 months and, if they're approved, will also be allowed to bring their families to Canada.

Industry groups are applauding the new program, which they say is badly needed to address a lack of people available or willing to work on farms and in food-processing plants.

But a spokesperson for the group Justice for Migrant Workers says the access to permanent residency will only apply to those who take part in the narrow pilot program.

The group says it will continue to be unavailable to the thousands of migrant farm-workers who arrive through the seasonal agriculture workers program. (The Canadian Press)



An official with the animal welfare legal advocacy group Animal Justice wants law enforcement to crack down on Stampede rodeo and chuckwagon events.

Camille Labchuk says the large number of horses on the track, combined with the speed at which they're running make crashes inevitable, and she says it's illegal under Alberta's provincial animal welfare laws to cause distress to animals.

Chuckwagon driver Chad Harden has been barred indefinitely from competing at the Calgary Stampede after a collision caused a horse's death last Thursday.
