Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says British Columbia will play an important role in the upcoming federal race.

Trudeau made the remarks to a crowd of supporters at a Liberal fundraiser last night at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

He says B-C understands the importance of investing in the environment to grow the economy and partnering with Indigenous communities in the spirit of reconciliation.

They are values Trudeau says British Columbians need to ensure resonate across the country, as conservative governments have been elected in so many other provincial legislatures. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Plane-Crash)

A grieving Vancouver Island politician says her brother Al McBain was flying the float plane that went down off northern Vancouver Island.

Natalie Chambers, a member of the council in Saanich, B-C, says her late father and two brothers were all deeply involved in the aviation industry.

So she says it's strangely fitting that the team dispatched to find surviving victims of the crash was rescue squadron 4-42, the same one her late father belonged to.

Chambers describes McBain, who was one of four people who died in the crash, as a caring, passionate person who would help anybody in need. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Plane-Crash-Wilkinson)

Canadian Coast Guard Minister Jonathan Wilkinson is thanking crew members for their work responding to a fatal float plane crash north of Vancouver Island.

Wilkinson told a crowd in Vancouver yesterday that it has obviously been a terrible tragedy and his thoughts are with those involved, as well as their families friends and communities.

He made the comments at the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said members of the coast guard do vital, life-saving work.

The Transportation Safety Board sent a crew to investigate the crash and the B-C Coroners Service says it will also conduct a probe to determine if there are ways to prevent deaths in similar circumstances. …
