WASHINGTON - Sue Gordon, a career intelligence official who serves as deputy to the director of national intelligence, will resign Aug. 15, President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday. Ms. Gordon's exit will allow Mr. Trump to replace her with someone who can serve in an acting capacity as the nation's top intelligence official. He plans to name Joseph Maguire, director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Mr. Trump had intended to nominate Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas, as director of national intelligence, replacing Daniel Coats, who is resigning the same day as Ms. Gordon. But Mr. Ratcliffe's potential nomination collapsed amid bipartisan criticism about his lack of expertise and allegations that he padded his resume.

In her letter of resignation, Ms. Gordon emphasized her experience and praised intelligence agency employees. Mr. Trump has repeatedly derided the agencies' conclusions when they conflict with his own.

GOP cuts Twitter spending

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Republican Party, the Trump campaign and other GOP organizations said Thursday they are freezing their spending on Twitter to protest the platform's treatment of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Twitter briefly locked Mr. McConnell's campaign account Wednesday after it shared a video in which some protesters outside his home spoke of violence against him. He is recovering from a shoulder fracture. Twitter blamed a tweet "that violated our violent threats policy."

One protester reportedly said Mr. McConnell should have broken his neck instead of his shoulder. Mr. McConnell said the decision to ban his campaign account was indicative of the "left-wing tilt of these big companies," which he said suppress speech on social media they don't like. …
