Philadelphia's police commissioner says he's surprised the gunman who shot and wounded six officers surrendered after he barricaded himself in a home for seven hours.

Richard Ross says the gunman mentioned he had an extensive criminal history as he tried to negotiate his surrender on a cellphone.

The commissioner does not believe the gunman knew that two police officers were trapped upstairs in the home, along with three civilians.

He says tear gas ultimately caused the gunman to come out early this morning and he was taken into custody.

The shooting started Wednesday afternoon when gunfire erupted in the home as officers were serving a narcotics warrant.(5)



When Mounties release more information about their investigation into last month's triple-homicide in B-C and the two-week manhunt that ended in the two suspects' suicides in northern Manitoba, at least one family member is hoping for more than just speculative conclusions.

Stetson Deese is the brother of Chynna Deese, the young American tourist who was shot dead with her Australian boyfriend as they were nearing the Yukon border bound for Alaska.

Deese says he and his family are prepared for the possibility they may never know why his sister was killed in such a seemingly random act.

But he hopes police will have enough information to at least quash some of the many unverified theories floating around online.(5)
