Representatives from more than 180 nations, including Canada, have gathered in Switzerland to agree on protections for vulnerable species.

The World Wildlife Conference on trade in endangered fauna and flora, which takes place every three years, will run today through August 28th with the aim of ensuring that global trade in specimens of wild animals and plants doesn't jeopardize their survival.

They will take up such issues as the trade in ivory and the demand for shark fin soup that is decimating shark populations.

The Geneva gathering comes three months after the first comprehensive U-N report on biodiversity warned that extinction is looming for over one-million species of plants and animals.(3)



The federal New Democrats will be looking for another candidate to run in the Quebec riding of Longueuil-Saint-Hubert after they ejected M-P Pierre Nantel from the upcoming election fold.

Yesterday's boot followed confirmation he was in discussions to ditch the N-D-P and run for the Green party instead.

The parents of a Halifax woman who survived a seemingly random attack that left her fiance dead in New Zealand say they are "devastated" by the tragedy.

The parents of Bianca Buckley say they have been in touch with their daughter, but have said nothing further.

Buckley called police Friday to report she and her Australian boyfriend were attacked by a man who fired a gun inside their parked van near Raglan, New Zealand.

Sean McKinnon was shot, and his body was found hours later inside the abandoned van in another town.

Police arrested a 23-year-old man and charged him with murder, aggravated robbery and threatening to kill. …
