(Switzerland-Endangered-Species)

Representatives from more than 180 nations, including Canada, have gathered in Switzerland to agree on protections for vulnerable species.

The World Wildlife Conference on trade in endangered fauna and flora, which takes place every three years, will run today through August 28th with the aim of ensuring that global trade in specimens of wild animals and plants doesn't jeopardize their survival.

They will take up such issues as the trade in ivory and the demand for shark fin soup that is decimating shark populations.

The Geneva gathering comes three months after the first comprehensive U-N report on biodiversity warned that extinction is looming for over one-million species of plants and animals.(3)
