Scott Fichter didn't have much time to prepare for his first season as Brownsville's football coach, and he's been making sure to take full advantage of the offseason going into year two.

"Last year, with the amount of time we had, it was difficult to implement an offense and defense and put together a coaching staff," Fichter said. "I feel that it humbled me, and this year we're just more prepared as a staff and getting the kids more prepared, because we've had the time to look through things, analyze, and get that preparation for the upcoming season."

It's no secret that the Falcons have long been one of the WPIAL's bottom feeders. They've failed to win more than two games in each of the past 13 seasons and they haven't been to the playoffs since 2000. Still, last year's 0-10 mark didn't sit well with Fichter, who is still itching to experience the feeling of a winning locker room with his players on a Friday night.

"I look forward to that moment, getting that first win together as a group and as a staff," Fichter said. "This year, the excitement we have is just that much greater, because like I said, of how much effort everybody's been putting in, from the coaches to the players."

Fichter's job will be made easier by the fact that he has a quarterback with varsity experience in sophomore Hunter Assad, who played the majority of the 2018 season as a freshman. He completed only 20 of 69 passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns with six interceptions, but Fichter believes he's ready for a big leap having already gained a year's worth of experience.

"He's been putting in a lot of extra time, other than just what we're doing at our summer workouts and stuff, which is great, because he definitely has the drive to want to succeed," Fichter said. "This year we brought in a quarterbacks coach as well to specifically work with our quarterbacks on our roster, and I think that's really helping him to understand and grow in the offense we're running. …
