Archer a Big Topic Down Stretch

Article excerpt

It's likely most fans are aware that Sunday is when Pirates general manager Neal Huntington does his radio show on 93.7 The Fan and speaks to the media.

The recaps genuinely are of interest because of what Huntington has to say.

The biggest highlight this week was a question about pitcher Chris Archer, who is on the injured list with a right shoulder injury which occurred Wednesday. Huntington was asked for an update.

"Chris had a second opinion, and it confirmed that he's got some inflammation in the shoulder," Huntington said. "We'll re-assess in about 7-10 days and see where we are."

What does that mean? Inflammation isn't an injury; it is a symptom of an injury. Huntington's initial answer doesn't say a lot. The latter part, however, does.

Archer will miss at least two starts based on the time period Huntington gave before Archer can be evaluated. The Pirates only have 30 games left after Sunday.

It might not be wise to bring Archer back for what would amount to four or five starts. If everything with Archer is good by Sept. 4, which is 10 days from Sunday, it'll be 14 days since Archer has thrown. He would need to throw a side session and possibly a simulated game before he could pitch in a big-league game.

Another reason why it might not be wise to bring Archer back this season is because Huntington said the Pirates already feel comfortable in their evaluation on him.

"There's a lot to like with Chris Archer. We want to make sure that we do the right thing by him," Huntington said on his weekly radio show. "We don't want him to feel like he has to come back out to earn his spot. We see some really positive signs. We recognize the issues and challenges, but we see some really positive signs and expect Chris is going to be a really good major league pitcher again next year."

Huntington all but said that Archer will be back in the rotation next season. …
