Shawnee Heights Club Fair Offers More Than Fun

On a recent Wednesday morning, Shawnee Heights High School students streamed down the gym stairs to reach the cluster of tables on the floor. Fellow students representing the school’s approximately 25 clubs were there to greet them, talk about what their particular organization has to offer, and hopefully get them to sign up.

Food was a big draw. Drama Club members held signs promising food at every meeting. Amnesty Club members Andrea Lopez and Maddie Lamond handed out homemade cupcakes and candy, while also talking about their group’s mission. Lamond pointed out their community service work, including supporting human rights and the LGBTQ community.

The club also adopts a family at Christmas to make sure the children get presents.

“Amnesty is an international club founded on the basis of supporting human rights and working with people less fortunate,” said Lopez, who is the club president. “I’ve always been interested in politics, but a lot of people aren’t. Surprisingly! As high schoolers, we can’t directly go out and do a lot. So, this gives us a chance to help with what everyone here is going through and also gives teenagers an opportunity to know what’s happening in the world around them — that there are bigger problems than need to be fixed.”

Principal Ed West noted some of the clubs, such as Spirit Club, FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) and Key Club have been around a long time. However, three or four new ones are formed every year based on student interests. All it takes is just three or four students and a willing sponsor to form a club.

The student council monitors all the clubs and helps new ones get organized and draft their charter.

“It makes the school year go better for kids,” West said. “They get to be involved with friends and something they’re interested in. …
