The Manitoba Metis Federation wants a federal judge to quash Ottawa's deal to transfer Kapyong Barracks land to First Nations.

The reason?

Federation president David Chartrand says Metis were not consulted about the transfer of the former Winnipeg military base.

The Trudeau government launched negotiations with seven First Nations that culminated in a deal this year to transfer most of the land to become an urban reserve.

Council's vote was preceded by appeals from 11 people -- all but one a member of the city's Sikh or Muslim community.

In May, the province revealed the facility would need significant repair work for a leaky roof.
