The British Columbia government is rolling out a 10-point plan to protect youth from the health risks of vaping, including cutting nicotine content, restricting flavours, increasing taxes and supporting youth-led anti-vaping campaigns.

Health Minister Adrian Dix says youth vaping rates are increasing, putting young people at risk of serious illness.

He cited data from a British Medical Journal report that youth vaping rates have increased 74 per cent between 2017 and 2018.

Daniel David, a vaping industry spokesman, says there are concerns the government's approach to restricting flavours could harm efforts by adults to quit smoking.

Health Canada has issued a warning to people who vape to monitor themselves for symptoms of vaping-related pulmonary illness following hundreds of such cases in the United States and a few in Canada. (The Canadian Press)



Across the U-S, the number of vaping illnesses continues to grow, but officials have noticed the pace is beginning to slow.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported another 121 cases yesterday, bringing the total of confirmed and probable cases to two-thousand-172.

The outbreak appears to have started in March and peaked in late summer -- with a lag in reporting possible.

Of the latest cases, the C-D-C says less than half are people hospitalized with lung damage in the last three weeks.
