Washington's national security adviser is out with a dire warning for Canada about Huawei (WAH'-way).

Robert O'Brien was speaking at an international security conference in Halifax.

He says the federal government must reject the Chinese telecom giant's bid to deploy its 5-G network because the technology will be used to undermine national security.

He also say the Chinese state could use data scraped from its 5-G mobile network to ''micro-target'' Canadians with personalized texts aimed at undermining elections.

National Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says safety and security is Ottawa's top priority. (11)

Andrew Scheer is shaking things up.

The federal Conservative leader has fired two of his top aides.

The move comes as Scheer and his party grapple with the fallout from a disappointing result in the federal election.

Scheer announced the changes in a letter to caucus, saying chief of staff Marc-Andre Leclerc and communications director Brock Harrison have both been relieved of their duties effective immediately.

The letter reads in part -- quote -- ''We have an important job to do holding Justin Trudeau and his corrupt Liberal government to account and when we do that job well, we will be ready to replace him when the next election comes.'' (11)



New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh has tapped two M-Ps from British Columbia to lead his caucus.

Peter Julian has been re-appointed as the N-D-P House leader and Rachel Blaney will take on the role of party whip.

The role of House leader takes on added significance in a minority Parliament.

They're responsible for negotiating with other parties on how work will get done in the Commons, including on votes of confidence. (11)
