An Indigenous child welfare authority and the Manitoba government are trying to protect computer files after a malware attack last week.

Southern First Nations Network of Care spokesman Jim Compton says the organization's I-T department has been trying to restore service since its files were frozen on Thursday.

The Manitoba government says in a news release that it has offered technical support and other resources to the authority, and is limiting remote access to its computer systems to ensure security until the problem is resolved.

R-C-M-P confirm their Integrated Technological Crime Unit is investigating, and the province says the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security is investigating, too. (The Canadian Press)



Charges have been laid after R-C-M-P say a pickup collided with a tractor, killing the operator.

Police say the 59-year-old man was driving the tractor on a road near Arborg on Saturday evening when the truck came up from behind at a high rate of speed.

He was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

The 50-year-old driver of the pickup truck was not injured but faces charges including impaired operation of a conveyance causing death. (The Canadian Press)



Two people -- a 23-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman -- have died in a crash between a sedan and an S-U-V in northern Alberta.

R-C-M-P say the two died at the scene northwest of Slave Lake on Highway 2 at Nine Mile Bridge just after noon yesterday.

Police who were diverting traffic around the crash described conditions as icy.

The highway has since reopened in both directions as police continue to investigate. (The Canadian Press/Global Edmonton)
