For Some, Next Full Moon an Astronomical Rarity

Article excerpt

People living in the Eastern time zone of the United States will experience an astronomical rarity on the next full moon when it occurs in their region early Thursday morning.

The full moon in that area of the U.S. will occur at 12:12 a.m. on Dec. 12.

That means the Cold Moon, as it is called, turns 100% full at 12:12 on 12/12, said Peter Geiger, editor of the Farmer's Almanac, which is based in Lewiston, Maine.

For Topeka residents, the moon will turn full in the Central time zone at 11:12 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.

The number 12 is considered "one of the perfect numbers," Geiger said Tuesday in a phone interview from his Maine office.

Geiger said the fact of the full moon occurring at 12:12 on the 12th day of the 12th month may be particularly fascinating to those interested in numerology, which is the study of how numbers may relate to events.

To that end, he said, the Farmer's Almanac website — www.farmersalmanac.com — has listed some of the meanings that have been associated with the number 12.

Among them:

• The “Twelve Days of Christmas” start on Dec. 25 and run through Jan. 5.

• Twelve is associated with the heavens — 12 months and 12 zodiac signs.

• It’s a number widely used in the Bible — such as the number of apostles of Jesus Christ and the number of tribes of Israel. In the book of Revelation, there are 12 gates and 12 angels.

• The number of hours on a clock face is 12.

• Twelve is the number of members on a jury.

• There are 12 stages of life in Buddhism.

• The Ancient Greeks worshiped 12 major gods of Olympus.

• Eggs come in packs of 12.

• The average human has 12 ribs.

• The number of inches in a foot is 12.

• There were 12 knights of King Arthur’s Round Table.

• Individuals go through 12 grades in school.

In its news release on the December full moon, the Farmer's Almanac cited information from NumerolgySecrets. …
