One day after its historic impeachment votes, the Democratic-led House gave President Donald Trump a victory on the new NAFTA.

By a 385-to-41 vote, the House approved a bill that puts in place terms of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

The legislation passed after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won key concessions from an administration anxious to pass the trade deal before next year's election season makes that task more difficult.

The pact comes up for a vote in the House of Commons after the Christmas break. (20)

The U-S Senate remains at an impasse in setting rules for next year's impeachment trial.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have not been able to agree on whether the trial will include witnesses.

Democrats want to hear from witnesses with firsthand knowledge of President Trump's dealings with Ukraine.

Leader McConnell says he does not want to hear from any witnesses.

At least one of those witnesses -- White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney -- has been prohibited by the White House from testifying. (20)

Ottawa is asking the United States not to sign a final trade agreement with China that doesn't settle the question of Meng Wanzhou and the two Michaels.

It's been more than a year since Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were detained in China after Canada's arrest of the Huawei executive at the request of the U-S.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau -- in a wide-ranging interview with The Canadian Press -- says this case has affected virtually every aspect of Canada's relations with China.

Trudeau says he regrets that Kovrig and Spavor have been caught up in the diplomatic squabble with China.

But he says he didn't regret that Canada lived up to its extradition treaty with the United States. …
