In his annual Christmas message, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is urging Canadians to lend a hand to people who need help.

Trudeau says it's the season for giving, and for giving back.

He says one of the greatest holiday traditions is taking care of each other -- something Canadians do all year round.

Trudeau also thanks Canada's Armed Forces members at home and overseas for their service. (10)



U-S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says his country is sticking with Canada in fighting what he calls China's -- quote -- "coercive detentions of Canadian citizens."

Pompeo and Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne say they talked yesterday about a range of global concerns.

Canadians Michael Spavor (SPAV'-ohr) and Michael Kovrig (KOH'-vrihg) were detained in China days after Canada arrested Chinese tech executive Meng Wanzhou (MUNG' wan-JOH') on a U-S extradition warrant more than a year ago.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has previously said he's asked the U-S- not to sign a new trade agreement with Beijing until the two Canadians are freed. (10)



The son of a Canadian geologist jailed in Dubai on fraud charges says he will remain in prison after a judge rejected his appeal on a technicality.

Alexis Gauthier says the Dubai judge found his father not guilty today on 11 charges, but Gauthier will remain in jail because his lawyer didn't appeal the remaining 62 charges against him within the proper time period.

Alexis says he doesn't understand how his father's lawyer could be that incompetent.

Andre Gauthier's family says he was a whistleblower who alerted authorities in the United Arab Emirates to irregular dealings in a gold-trading company, but that he was then arrested and charged with committing the very fraud he uncovered. …
