PATRICK S. GILMORE
Probably the most famous song from the Civil War is not even associated with that great conflict. Patrick Gilmore's rousing "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" has more often than not been associated with later struggles such as World War One. There is no cause for wonder why this tune was frequently sung by those soldiers mustered out of service.
When Johnny comes marching home again, Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer, the boys will shout,
The ladies they will all turn out.
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.
The old church-bell will peal with joy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
To welcome home our darling boy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village lads and lasses say
With roses they will strew the way.
