Between January and May, 1960, approximately sixty personal interviews were held with approximately forty-five local participants. Most of the central actors discussed in this study were interviewed, and some were later interviewed for a second time. The guarantees of anonymity given to these participants preclude any citation of specific interviews; the Notes summarize only the written sources of information. It should be kept in mind, however, that a large part of this study rests on personal interviews and that interviews have supplemented the written sources in almost all of the Notes. Specific Notes indicate the places in which the written evidence has been particularly scanty and the reliance on interviews particularly great.
In addition to those abbreviations used in the text, the following abbreviations appear in the Notes:

No distinction has been made between the Newark Evening|
News (six days a week) and the Newark Sunday News. Most
agencies keep some kind of file of News clippings. In addi-
tion, the News has its own file room, and the Newark Public
Library has the complete News on microfilm.
