Donna's eight-year-old stepson, Josh, was formally diagnosed with ADHD during his first years in school. Josh came to live with Donna and his father in infancy, but Donna was unaware that her stepson was anything more than highly active. Donna's story of her experiences touches on many of the issues discussed in this book. Her story is similar to that of a majority of families dealing with ADHD: Donna is unsure of the exact cause of her son's problems, much of her energy and concern is applied to working with daily behavior problems, and she talks openly about her frustration in some situations. One central issue that Donna returns to has to do with distinguishing Josh's emotionally based behavior from his biologically based ADHD symptoms. Donna reports that a large part of her son's motivation and success depends on his mood. She talks about his earlier struggles with his natural mother and how these sometimes impact his behavior.
