THE ROUTES TO BAR WORK

It is easy to misinterpret data on the first source of information on any topic. A person will often remember information but not its source. Similarly, one may recall speaking with a person but not specifically what was said. Dissociation occurs between the source and content of a message in human memory (Steinfatt, 1977). People tend to remember and report more recent or more credible sources and forget initial sources that first provided them with the information (Steinfatt, Gantz, Siebold,&Miller, 1973). These effects were considered in data collection. We were interested in learning of influential first sources who actually moved the woman toward bar work.


INFLUENTIAL FIRST SOURCES OF BAR WORK INFORMATION

Phase I Data:Optimal Heterophily in Workers as Information Sources

The most persuasive interpersonal source is often a person with characteristics that are very similar to those of the target individual but dissimilar in the direction of the desired movement of the target (Steinfatt, 1977). Just under 53% of the Bangkok bar workers in Phase I were first introduced to the concept of bar work via friendship with a bar employee, usually another bar worker (see Table 3.1). Most workers in this group reported noticing that when a bar worker close to their age and from their village was the source, she had seemed different from other women in the way she dressed and wore her hair and makeup. They liked this difference. The majority also reported noticing how the worker had carried herself and that she had seemed to them
