SUPPORT STAFF, MANAGEMENT, AND OWNERS

Previous chapters have discussed the nature of bars and bar work and of the workers who engage in sex work. This chapter considers persons who are associated financially in some way with the bar but do not engage in sex work.


SUPPORT STAFF

Bars with bar workers provide employment for many other workers who are not personally engaged in sex work. While bar workers make up a large proportion of the bar’s employees, and while most bars would fail without them, many people work in bars who are not bar workers. In a bar, these other employees commonly include the manager, mamasan, maids, bartenders, waiters and sometimes waitresses, one or more DJs, and reception workers. The waiters, bartenders, and reception personnel are usually cross-trained, also serving as security personnel and bouncers if necessary. In foreign-oriented bars, we found that for every ten bar workers, another 4–6 people worked at the bar in some capacity other than sex work. This proportion of other employees varied across the various bar types studied, with four additional workers as the average.

The 1997 CDCD government survey of sex work venues in Bangkok found that “of 36,473 people working at 1,421 sex establishments, 26,361 were sex workers. In the provinces, there were 67,789 people working at 6,338 sex
