CUSTOMER MOTIVATION AND BEHAVIOR

The preceding chapters on bar workers and other bar personnel contain some of the information obtained from customers. Customer information discussed in those chapters includes the areas and types of bars frequented by various customer groups; the interactions between bar workers and their customers; and information on bar worker condom use messages and their effects in bar worker/customer interactions. This chapter discusses customer demographics and changes in these demographics over the years of the study, customers’ beliefs and behaviors as they relate to potential disease aspects of the bar, customer interactions with the women who work there, the motivations of customers and noncustomers, customers’ moral and religious concerns, and customers’ views on condom use.


CUSTOMER DEMOGRAPHICS

In both phases, customer demographics varied greatly with the bar. Large, expensive first-floor bars in Patpong and Pattaya were mainly Western-oriented, as were all bars in Cowboy and Nana. Upstairs Patpong bars were 10–30% Asian in customer population in the early stages of Phase I, depending on the bar, the time of the evening, and the season. This had increased to 30–70% Asian by 1992, a trend that remained constant during Phase II. Western customers’ countries of origin were spread across Europe, Australia/ New Zealand, and North America. About 60% of the Asian customers were Thai, many of whom were relatively affluent young men in their twenties and
