Contemporary reviews of Sayers’s religious dramas and essays on religious issues provide insight into the intellectual and social context in which Sayers was working. The Hannay collection offers papers on such topics as Sayers and Wilkie Collins, Christian aesthetics in Sayers’s dramas, good and evil as themes in the detective novels, and the importance of Harriet Vane as an influence in Sayers’s novelistic development. Most recently, John Thurmer’s collection of essays on Sayers’s Christian thought has provided a much-needed contemporary examination of Sayers’s theology, while the collection of essays edited by Christopher Dean and presented to Sayers specialist Barbara Reynolds contains contributions from leading Sayers scholars on such various themes as the author’s personal qualities, her work as a translator, her drama, and her spirituality. Finally, Janice Brown’s recent study provides a more precise theological study of Sayers’s work, focusing on how the seven deadly sins appear in the detective novels.
