Spiritual authority differs from political authority in that it only grows stronger from opposition and controversy. It's a good thing if an idea produces heated opposition at first. The view of rock music and rock counterculture presented thus far illustrates well the sociological idea that music-making, and culture more generally, are accomplishments. From what we have seen so far, it is amazing that music was accomplished at all in St. Petersburg. The lack of instruments and sound equipment, the lack of reliable sources of cultural information, the inability to secure space in which to perform, and a deeply entrenched infrastructure of surveillance and cultural management all worked against the orderly and routine practice
