There are many people and organisations I would like to thank for their support in bringing this book to fruition.

I am grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Museums and Galleries Commission (now Resource: the Council of Museums, Archives and Libraries) for their financial support of the international conference that provided a springboard for this book. In particular I thank Stuart Davies, Caroline Lang and Alison Coles who provided not only encouragement and support but also advice that informed the process of conference programming. I would like to thank all the speakers, chairs, performers, delegates and students for making the conference such a lively and stimulating forum for debate.

I am indebted to all of my colleagues within the Department of Museums Studies for many things. Everyone played a key role in the organisation, planning and running of all aspects of the conference.
