Creating the Future's Schools

Acknowledgements

The book came together as the result of my time as a Visiting Scholar in Education at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, where I delivered a series of lectures on the future of schooling. That posting gave me the opportunity to assemble much of the material contained in this book. I am particularly grateful to my friend and colleague of many years, Professor Takeshi Sasamori, for his encouragement.

The book builds on (and therefore in some instances has had to re-use) some of the material contained in Education for the Twenty-First Century, which I co-authored with Professor Richard Slaughter and which was published by Routledge. In the same way, I have drawn on my opening synoptic chapter in The Primary School in Changing Times, edited by Tony Townsend and published by Routledge in 1998.

I was able to systematize my thinking about the emerging shape of schools and schools systems, about the new roles for teachers, about the nature of the future for this generation of schoolchildren and about the intricacies of planning by writing a set of monographs on these topics. I am grateful to the Australian Council for Educational Administration (ACEA) and the Independent Association of Registered Teachers in Victoria (IARTV) both for publishing these works and then for allowing me to use the raw material in them for this present book.

I am most fortunate as an Emeritus Professor to have been given a congenial base to work from in the Centre for Applied Educational Research (CAER) in the University of Melbourne. I could not have succeeded with the production of this book without the resources of the Centre. I wish to acknowledge the collegiality I have enjoyed with the members of the Centre, and in particular the help of its Director, Professor Peter Hill, and its Executive Officer, Tim Jones.
