Teachers for the school of the future

Principle No. 6 Deploy the educational staff both professionally and wisely; they are a costly resource.

Principle No. 7 When employing professional teachers, think in terms of bundles of educational functions suited to the skills of each one, not in terms of a standardized package for all.

Further, teachers require sophisticated equipment and materials now. Many of them are employed full-time in materials and curriculum construction, and in advising those working in classrooms. They work in buildings far more expensive to provide, equip and maintain than were the school premises even of a decade ago. And they expect to be involved with many fewer students than was the case with teachers even a decade or two ago. Class sizes have come down, pupil:teacher ratios have fallen, the quantum of face-to-face teaching has dropped, the number of lessons taught per teacher has gone down, and the requirement to undertake staff development exercises has become more widespread.
