In editing the material the compilers have:
1 provided their own title for each extract;
2 standardized the format of the references;
3 deleted all cross-references in the original text;
4 placed editorial insertions in square brackets within the extract itself.
Immediately beneath the heading of each extract, the source of the material is given in detail. The page numbers in the detailed reference refer to each of the pages in the original text, from which passages making up the extract have been taken. For example, if the reference refers to pages 2, 2-3 and 3, then one of the passages making up the extract has been taken from page 2 of the original text, one passage has been taken from a piece beginning on page 2 and running on to page 3, and a third passage has been taken elsewhere on page 3.
In the editorial material introducing each section and each extract, all the page numbers in brackets within the text refer to other pages within the source book, so as to aid cross-referencing. Any quotation used in the editorial material, unless otherwise referenced, can be found in the text from which the extract has been taken.
