Pradip Kothari's daughters are often known as just that: Pradip Kothari's daughters. As he returned to taking up causes, increasingly Payal and Toral grew up outside his limelight. Before Navratri, friends would inevitably come out of the woodwork, then casually ask for free tickets or an opportunity to schmooze with the stars from Bollywood, India's movie industry, flown in for the festivals. Payal and Toral, rarely seen with their parents except during aarti, would hop onstage and deliver the bouquets of flowers to Bollywood legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit. Whereas Indian teens would likely kill for such opportunity, neither Payal nor Toral's adolescent face showed any awe. The problem was, they rarely watched the movies these actors were in.
That changed as they grew into bonafide desi teenagers who danced and shook their shoulders to bhangra. Desi teens have appropriated the Punjabi music and dance as a symbol of their hybrid identities, mixing it with rap, reggae, and hip hop. One
