FIRST SEASON: 1898-1899

The Theatre’s output, play by play, during the period 1898-1917 gives an impression of both development and exploration. It also shows how responsibility was shared and how uncertain achievement and popular success could be. Either as actor and/or director Stanislavsky is associated with the Theatre’s major successes, but he was also responsible for many failed productions. In addition, Nemirovich-Danchenko contributed to successful productions such as Three Sisters and The Lower Depths as did Sanin, Luzhskiy and the two assistant directors.


TSAR FEDOR IOANNOVICH

As late as May 1898, no firm decision had been taken as to which play would open the first season. Nemirovich’s preference was for Sophocles’ Antigone, followed by The Merchant of Venice and with Aleksey Tolstoy’s play as the third première of the season. However, by the time rehearsals began in June, a decision had been reached to begin with Fedor, which Stanislavsky clearly saw as the trump card in his directorial pack. He wrote the bulk of the score, with the exception of the key scene on the bridge over the Yauza, during June, and rehearsals began on 7 July. The director’s score for the Yauza scene, which proved so successful with the public, was not ready until 12 September, a mere four weeks or so before opening. The scenes involving representatives of the Church were still included at this stage and, only on 24 August, when Nemirovich reported the censor’s permission to perform the play, did it become apparent that one of the conditions imposed included omission of all the religious characters. This entailed wholesale alterations when the play had already been in rehearsal for over a month.
