As always a book is the product of many people’s labour. I am particularly grateful to Pauline Jones and May Bowers who typed the manuscript, to Andrew Lawrence for his cartographic skills and to Maralyn Beech for her photographic work.
I would also like to thank the governing body of St John’s College, Oxford, whose generous offer of a visiting scholarship enabled me to complete most of the manuscript during a summer of intensive work in stimulating surroundings.
The book is dedicated to my wife Angela and my children Chloe and Emmanuel. As any author knows, it is one’s immediate family that shares all the burdens of producing a book but few of the credits.
