In the case of a History such as this, relevant material for further study is of course the whole body of English literature which it has surveyed in brief and whatever has been written about that literature. The Chronological Table of Writers and the listing of their works in the Index together set the guidelines for further reading. The following bibliography has been designed to give particular help to the reader to whom access to a well-equipped library may not be easy. It presupposes that the reader wishes to read the literature itself before proceeding to consult critical books written around the literature. It therefore attempts to indicate what works are currently available in inexpensive editions, especially in the case of writers whose works are less frequently come by in bookshops. It also lists a few useful critical books.
The abbreviation (Pb) indicates a paperback.
