‘Which school did you go to?’
Even today, in Australia the vast majority of judges are white, middle-class, private school-educated men. This is mostly because of the environment and the time in which they were educated. While law faculties have been traditionally dominated by white, middle-class, private school-educated male students, the mix of students is slowly changing. Since the 1970s in particular, for example, the number of women studying law has increased dramatically, and many law schools now have a majority of female students.
Nevertheless, law schools can be confronting places to enter for a variety of reasons. Some of you will find the high proportion of students who come directly from private schools a bit daunting, especially if they all seem to know each other and appear to have ‘private’ clubs.
