THE DEATH-MASK OF NAPOLEON

STUDENTS OF NAPOLEON ARE greatly indebted to Monsieur E. de Veauce for his thorough investigation of the extant deathmasks of Napoleon in 'L'Affaire du Masque de Napoléon' ( 1957). Until the publication of this work, their origin and classification have been obscured by confusion and controversy. Since 1833 when Antommarchi raised a public subscription for the reproduction of the death-mask which he brought from St Helena, doubts have arisen about its authenticity. The low receding forehead, the weak chin, and the fine-drawn elegance of the face are in surprising contrast with the normal image of Napoleon. Yet Count Bertrand, and particularly Countess Bertrand, who was present at the taking of the cast, never repudiated the Antommarchi mask. Monsieur de Veauce shows by a comparison of the masks and by an analysis of the Marchand, Bertrand, Antommarchi, Burton and Lowe papers that the difficulties can be resolved.

Lowe wrote to Bathurst, 'Dr Burton, by a happy combination of dexterity and patience, succeeded--though with very imperfect materials--in obtaining an almost perfect cast. The Bertrands have kept the face; Dr Burton has kept the back part of the head, the craniological part.' For technical reasons the casts taken by Antommarchi and Burton together were probably in three rather than two pieces--the face from the temples to the mouth, the skull including the forehead, and the ears and lower jaw. No trace has been found of the part kept by Dr Burton, and as a result of the quarrel between
