In affluent countries cultural perpetuation of slimness has created an unrealistic standard for body image of women and, to a lesser extent, for men (Abrams et al, 1994). Preoccupation with body weight and appearance contribute to food-related behaviors that range from dietary restraint to unhealthy dietary practices to excessive food consumption and hinging.
Eating disturbances occur across a continuum from severe underweight (anorexia nervosa) through unusual dietary practices to maintain body weight (bulimia nervosa)
