This book is based on a two-day conference entitled Animals in Asia: Representations and Relationships held at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands in September 1997. The conference was sponsored by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in Leiden, and sincere thanks are due to the IIAS and its staff, including Wim Stokhof (IIAS Director), Sabine Kuypers (Assistant Director), Marianne Lengehenkel (who helped to organize the conference), Cathelijne Veenkamp and Kitty Yang. Much of the editorial work that went into this book also took place at the IIAS, and the final stages of manuscript preparation were carried out at the School of Anthropological Studies, Queen’s University Belfast.
In the course of producing this volume, encouragement, help and advice were received from many people, including Cynthia Chou, Cen Huang, Alex McKay, Shoma Munshi, Gerard Persoon and Reed Wadley. The two reviewers appointed by the publisher made many useful suggestions and criticisms for which I am grateful. I am also grateful to Arne Kalland and Kay Milton for their comments on an earlier draft of the Introduction to this book. Finally I would like to thank Liz Bramsen of the Nordic Institute for Asian Studies (NIAS) for her help in the preparation of the manuscript for publication.
