Strategy Representations

Three hundred and seventy two strategies from ten different planning domains were analyzed and represented in the course of this project. This chapter includes the full representation of each one of these strategies in its original form. Each strategy is described with a short phrase as a title, a sentence (usually an imperative) that describes the strategy as it pertains to the particular planning domain, and a pre-formal representation of the strategy that defines its abstract relational structure. Words and phrases in the representation that are meant to refer to significant planning concepts are capitalized and italicized, and each of these words and phrases is listed in chapter 5 along with a list of all of the strategies in which they appear.

It is certainly a strange thing to see the publication of large amounts of knowledge representation in the context of a scholarly work, but there are a number of reasons why including the full text of these representations is appropriate here. First, because these representations are pre-formal, constructed as a sort of stylized English, they have a level of readability that is much higher than formal representations. Second, they serve as the basis for the representational claims that 1 have made. By providing the complete evidence for these claims, the hope is to enable the research community to directly dispute these claims by proposing alternatives to the representational choices that I have made. Third, I find that each of these strategies is inherently interesting in a way that no previous represented knowledge has been, and hope that by reading them, you will experience at least part of the excitement that I felt in describing their deep representational structure.
