Edited by Susan Lehr, a Professor of reading and children's literature at Skidmore, the essays are written by well-known scholars of children's literature as well as renowned children's book authors and illustrators.

Tatar, M. (1992). Off with their heads! Fairy tales and the culture of childhood. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press. A Professor of German Literature at Harvard University, Maria Tatar provides an extraordinary exploration of traditional fairy tales as well as a few modern pieces to demonstrate the service of these stories in the socialization of children. She stresses the importance of reading against the grain of these tales to question their formulaic patterns.

Zipes, J. (1989).Don't bet on the prince: Contemporary feminist fairy tales in North America and England. New York: Routledge. Jack Zipes is a Professor of German at the University of Minnesota and one of our nation's foremost scholars of the fairy tale. In this classic text, he provides a comprehensive anthology of essays as well as feminist fairy tales and poetry that question expected gender roles for children and adults in literature.
