CHAPTER 9
Basic facts
and mental
computation

In the past, school mathematics programs were dominated by practice of pen-and-paper methods for the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Mental mathematics also featured, with chanting of times tables and 'ten quickies' signalling the commencement of mathematics lessons. In the 1980s, students' understanding of written calculation methods came under scrutiny, with research indicating that flawless written computation performance did not necessarily equate to understanding of the procedures (e.g. Carpenter and Moser, 1982; Resnick, 1982). Calls were made for mathematics instruction to ensure that in promoting computational skill, rich conceptual knowledge was also developed (e.g. Brownell, 1956/1987; Skemp, 1989).

In a technological age, the necessity of teaching standard procedures for written computation is being questioned. In addressing this issue, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 1989) stated that instruction in the four operations should provide students with the understanding, skills and confidence to choose the most appropriate
